The South Kanara Association (SKA) London recently brought together families and community members at Alperton Community School, Stanley Avenue, London, for a vibrant celebration of Monthi Fest. The annual event, steeped in faith, devotion, and cultural spirit, served as a poignant reminder of Mangalorean heritage and traditions, drawing attendees dressed in traditional attire for a day of fellowship and cultural expression.
The festivities commenced with a lively family photo session, setting a communal tone before the solemn rituals began. Children joyfully participated in the traditional Fula Ushayche, offering fresh flowers to Mother Mary during a colourful procession — a ceremony emphasizing the community's dedication to preserving traditions for its younger generation. The morning's spiritual highlight was a solemn Konkani Mass, led by Fr. Jason Pais, where the blessed Novem (new corn) received its consecration and was then distributed among the congregation. Though Fr. Valerian Castelino could not attend the Mass, he joined the community for the afternoon's events.
Following the Mass, attendees gathered for a traditional Mangalorean Noven Jewan, a hearty harvest meal meticulously prepared and served by dedicated cooking and kitchen volunteers. This communal lunch fostered an atmosphere of camaraderie among families and friends. The afternoon transitioned into a vibrant cultural programme, featuring diverse dance performances by both children and adults representing various SKA London wards. These displays underscored the enthusiasm of the younger generation and the community's commitment to its rich cultural roots. Raffle tickets were also sold, adding to the festive mood.
During the programme, SKA London took the opportunity to honour and thank Fr. Jason Pais and Fr. Valerian Castelino for their spiritual guidance and presence. The day's celebrations culminated in a spirited traditional Baila dance, inviting participants of all ages to the dance floor, providing a fitting end to the cherished annual gathering. SKA London extended its profound gratitude to the many individuals and groups whose contributions ensured the event's success, including altar service volunteers Stacy D'Sa, Liana D'Sa, Freya Dias, Scarlett Vaz, Viaan Tauro, and Jewel D'Souza; the SKA Choir; Carlos Fernandes for sound; Ying for photography; and a multitude of generous main, platinum, and other sponsors who supported various aspects of the festivity.
