Kundapur witnessed the sombre return and final rites for 50-year-old Alwyn Prakash Kunder this week, nearly two months after his alleged murder under mysterious circumstances in Sharjah. His body arrived by flight from the UAE on September 25, leading to a funeral service held on Friday morning at the CSI Krupa Church cemetery near Shastri Circle.
Family, friends, and local dignitaries gathered at his Honnanakere residence within Kundapur Municipality limits before the procession. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Jayakar led the religious rites at CSI Krupa Church, assisted by Area President Rev. Kishore Kumar, Rev. Edwin Joseph, CASI Diocese Treasurer Ivan Sons, Rev. Praveen Maben, Rev. Fr. Ravi Shashikala of Basrur Elizabeth Church, and Rev. Steven Sarvottam. Alwyn Prakash Kunder was laid to rest beside his parents' graves at approximately 10:30 a.m.
Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLA A. Kiran Kumar Kodgi, and former MP K. Jayaprakash Hegde were among the prominent figures who visited the bereaved family. Coastal Development Authority Chairman M.A. Gafoor, Urban Development Authority Chairman Vinod Krasta, former municipal members Prabhakar, Rajesh Kaveri and Ratnakar, along with Dinesh Hegde Molahalli, Vikas Hegde, Vijay S. Poojary and V. Narasimha, also paid their respects. Earlier, M.A. Gafoor, Prashanth, Akash, Prameela Jattan and Uday had travelled to Mangaluru International Airport early Friday morning to complete the necessary formalities for receiving the remains.
Meanwhile, Udupi District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar confirmed that authorities are actively seeking information through Interpol regarding the alleged murder. He stated that while Alwyn's brother had approached him on September 22 requesting assistance, Udupi Police could not initiate legal action against any accused without an official Letter Rogatory, Red Corner Notice, or another appropriate Interpol notice. Efforts are underway to establish contact with the Indian Embassy in Dubai, facilitating communication for the family to follow the investigation and coordinate further steps.
Speaking in Kundapur, Anil Prashanth Kunder, Alwyn's elder brother, expressed profound grief over the 'brutal murder' of his 'soft-natured' sibling. Anil recounted Alwyn's last visit to his hometown with his wife and son last December, noting that Alwyn regularly called his family but never mentioned any personal or professional difficulties. "Those responsible should be punished," Anil affirmed.
Alwyn Prakash Kunder was the son of the late Sheila and Tejpal Kunder. The family originally hailed from Korangrapady in Udupi. His mother, Sheila, a staff nurse, relocated the family to Kundapur after a transfer, where she served at various health centres. The family owned a house in Honnanakere.
