Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Kota Srinivasa Pujari and Kundapur MLA A. Kiran Kurma Kodgi on Friday assessed the newly refurbished Koteshwar Fish Market in Kundapur taluk. The market's upgrade, costing Rs 81 lakh, forms a key component of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampad Yojana (PMMSY) for the 2024-25 fiscal year, specifically under the 'Climate Resilient Coastal Fisheries Village' (CRCFV) initiative, which designated Koteshwar as a fishing village.
This significant investment aims to enhance facilities for local fisherwomen, providing essential equipment and improving market infrastructure. MLA Kodgi highlighted the broader scope of the Central Government's Matsya Sampad Yojana 'Coastal Village' program, which has channeled a total of Rs 1.25 crores into various developmental works across Koteshwar village. Beyond the market's modernization, these funds will also support the construction of a crucial barrier in the Kodi Sea.
Speaking to reporters during the inspection, MP Pujari affirmed the commitment to implementing additional fishing-related projects within the Gram Panchayat. He emphasized the government's focus on bolstering the region's fishing community through strategic interventions. The project specifically addresses the needs of fisherwomen, ensuring they receive the necessary tools and a more conducive environment for their trade.
A host of dignitaries and local leaders accompanied the elected representatives. Among those present were Kundapur Fisheries Department Assistant Director Asha, BJP Kundapur Mandal President Suresh Shetty Gopady, former GPM Member Srilata Suresh Shetty, and contractors Pratapachandra Hegde Molahalli, Rajesh Udupa, and Sampath Kurma Shetty Shanadi. Also in attendance were Beijadi Fishermen's Cooperative Chief Executive Officer Ramesh Kanchan, former Koteswara Gram Panchayat President Krishna Golla, former vice-president Asha V. Sherigar, and former members Lokesh Ankadakatte, Suresh Devadiga, Chandramohan, Raghavendra Pujari, Viveka Devadiga, Vishalakshi Shettigar, Putti, and Asha G. Kunder. Prominent figures Shankar Ankadakatte, Bhaskara Kumbri, Shekhar Mogaveera Ankadakatte, Srinath Thekkatte, and senior fisherwoman Ratna also joined the inspection.
