Kapil to Rohit; There are five captains who led Team India in ICC finals
India is playing in the final of another ICC event. The 2021-23 World Test Championship final between India and Australia is taking place at the Oval in London. Rohit Sharma’s captaincy team India has entered the Test World Cup final for the second time in a row and is on the verge of becoming the champion. Rohit also made a record of being the 5th captain to lead Team India in the final of an ICC event by captaining the team in the WTC final.
Team India won their first ICC trophy with Kapil Dev’s 1983 ODI World Cup win at the historic Lord’s Stadium. But then the name of ICC was not International Cricket Council. Instead it was Imperial Cricket Council. After that in 1965 it became International Cricket Conference. It finally got its current name in 1987.
After that credit goes to Sourav Ganguly who led Team India in the final. Dada led Team India to the final of an ICC event for the first time in 2000. The final match of the ICC Trophy was played between India and New Zealand. Sourav led India lost the final by 4 wickets.
Under Sourav’s leadership, India reached the finals of two more ICC events. In 2002, the Champions Trophy final was played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Sri Lanka. The match was canceled due to heavy rain. India and Sri Lanka were declared joint winners as Reserve Day was also interrupted by rain. Sourav then led the team against Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup in 2003. But India lost that match.
After Sourav, Mahendra Singh Dhoni led India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup.
After that India played in the finals of three more ICC events under Dhoni’s captaincy and won two of them. Dhoni became the first captain in India’s history to win all the ICC trophies by winning the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. After that in 2014 under the leadership of Dhoni, Team India played another T20 World Cup final.
Virat Kohli led India to the final of an ICC trophy for the first time since Dhoni in the 2017 Champions Trophy. But India lost the match against Pakistan.
India reached the maiden World Test Championship final under Virat in 2021. But in the final match against New Zealand, Team India lost and returned empty handed.
The last captain in this list is Rohit Sharma. In another World Test Championship final, Rohit is leading the country in the final of an ICC event for the first time. The challenge of ending India’s ICC trophy drought is ahead of them.
