An altercation between student groups from Andhra Pradesh and the Northeastern region at S.K. College of Nursing in Kakinada city on Saturday prompted swift action from Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The Chief Minister immediately directed senior officials to address the situation and ensure student safety after the incident, which left one student injured.
The conflict escalated after students from the Northeast lodged a complaint with Sarpavaram police, alleging the theft of a mobile phone. Tensions flared within the college hostel when students from Andhra Pradesh learned about the police report, leading to a physical confrontation between the two factions. A girl sustained head injuries in the clash and received treatment at the Government General Hospital in Kakinada.
The incident also drew attention from the Government of Manipur, after some of its students reportedly voiced concerns about their safety and the campus environment to Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand. Following this, the Manipur government formally raised the matter with Andhra Pradesh authorities.
Responding to CM Naidu's directives, Kakinada District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad and Superintendent of Police G. Bindu Madhav promptly dispatched a team of officials to the campus on Saturday to maintain peace. District Collector Prasad confirmed the clash originated between Telugu students and those specifically from Manipur and Nagaland over the reported phone theft.
The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) later stated that the issue had been resolved amicably, with Northeastern students expressing satisfaction with the authorities' response. Officials guaranteed the safety and security of students, provided necessary accommodation, and successfully prevented any further escalation. To further ensure peace, district authorities arranged separate accommodation for 31 students from Manipur and Nagaland. Top officials are scheduled to hold follow-up talks with students on Sunday to foster lasting harmony on campus.
