Police in Jamtara district, Jharkhand recovered the remains of a young interfaith couple on the railway line that runs between Vidyasagar and Madankata stations on 24 October 2026. The deceased have been identified as Rocky Mandal, 20, and Nazia Khatoon, 17, both residents of Ringochingo village under the Karmatand police station.
Alakh Nath Chaubey, officer in charge of Karmatand police station, said a motorcycle was parked near a newly built water tank close to the tracks. “The owner was traced through the registration number, which helped us contact the families and establish the identities,” he explained. Mobile phones recovered from the scene confirmed the victims’ identities, and a case of unnatural death has been registered.
According to Chaubey, the pair left their homes on Friday evening to attend a local fair. After visiting a temple, a video appeared on Instagram in which the couple appealed to villagers not to separate them. The caption read, “Main gaonwalon ko abhi bol raha hoon ki yah bandhan kabhi alag mat karna. Hum logon ko jahan bhi dafnana ho ya kuch bhi karna, ek saath karna.” A photograph from the same post showed the young man applying vermilion to the girl's forehead, suggesting a symbolic marriage before death.
Local residents told The Indian Express that both families opposed the relationship. Two years earlier, community leaders from the two religious groups met and agreed that the couple should marry, but the families did not consent. The villagers had urged the families to halt any further communication between the pair. Reports also indicate that Nazia was allegedly married to another man the following year, although no legal case has been filed regarding that marriage.
The post‑mortem examination has been completed and the bodies have been handed over to their families for final rites.
