Mangaluru, 27 Oct 2026 – The government‑run HPV immunisation programme aimed at preventing cervical cancer will now run through 31 December, officials confirmed on Tuesday. Dr H.R. Thimmaiah, the District Health and Family Welfare Officer for Dakshina Kannada, announced the extension during a press briefing held at the department’s headquarters.
According to the officer, the decision follows a review of enrolment figures that showed a steady rise in demand for the vaccine at public health centres across the district. By keeping the schedule open until the last day of the year, authorities hope to reach more adolescent girls who have missed earlier appointments.
The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, administered in two doses, is part of the national effort to curb cervical cancer, a disease that remains a leading cause of mortality among women in Karnataka. Under the scheme, the shots are offered free of charge at all government‑run primary health centres and community health blocks in the region.
Dr Thimmaiah highlighted that the extension will allow health workers to intensify outreach in schools and rural villages, especially in areas where awareness about the vaccine is still low. He urged parents and guardians to bring eligible girls to the nearest centre before the deadline, emphasizing that early vaccination significantly reduces the risk of infection.
Local NGOs have pledged to assist the health department by organising information sessions and transport facilities for girls from remote hamlets. The combined effort of public officials and community groups aims to maximise coverage before the year concludes.
Residents seeking further details can contact the Dakshina Kannada Health Department office or visit the official portal for schedule updates and vaccination site locations.
