Udupi recently became the focal point for a critical discussion on India's energy future, as Prof. B.S. Sherigar, a retired Professor of Industrial Chemistry and former Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University, articulated green hydrogen's significant promise. Speaking last Saturday at the Dr. G. Shankar Government Women's First Grade College and Postgraduate Study Centre in Ajjarakad, Udupi, Prof. Sherigar emphasized its immense potential as an alternative fuel to drastically reduce India's dependence on oil and effectively mitigate carbon emissions.
His special lecture, titled 'Inflammable Air to Green Hydrogen: The Journey to an Alternate Fuel,' was jointly organized by the college's Department of Chemistry and its Internal Quality Assurance Cell at the PG AV Auditorium. During his address, Prof. Sherigar detailed India's proactive stance in developing clean energy sources. He highlighted the nation's ongoing experiments in hydrogen-powered public transport and its broader commitment to finding sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. The strategic adoption of green hydrogen, he underscored, holds the key to substantially reducing the environmental carbon burden.
Presiding over the event, College Principal Prof. Nikethana affirmed the importance of these advancements. She characterized the continuous research into green hydrogen as an alternative fuel as a clear indicator of developmental progress. Prof. Nikethana further elaborated that sustained innovation in this vital sector would undoubtedly create extensive opportunities for young researchers in the coming days. She specifically urged the female students present to cultivate a keen interest in this emerging field, encouraging them to strive towards becoming accomplished women scientists and researchers in green hydrogen and its associated disciplines.
The program commenced with a welcome address delivered by Puneeth Tendulkar, Head of the Department of Chemistry. Lecturer Amrutha concluded the proceedings with a vote of thanks, while student Shravani skillfully compered the event. Among the other dignitaries and faculty present were IQAC Coordinator Prof. Smt. Adiga and Balakrishna Bayari.
