On Wednesday, President Donald Trump unveiled a massive redevelopment plan for Washington Dulles International Airport, aiming to transform it into one of the world’s best airports. At the White House, Trump was joined by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority officials, and United Airlines executives to announce the multi-billion-dollar overhaul. The project will replace the aging C and D concourses while preserving the iconic main terminal designed by Eero Saarinen. Dulles, the primary international gateway to the nation’s capital, currently ranks 23rd out of 27 large airports nationwide, according to last year’s J.D. Power rankings.
The redevelopment plan, chosen from over 30 architectural proposals, will add more than five million square feet of new or renovated space. It includes a new central passenger spine, expanded parking, upgraded security screening areas, new shops and restaurants, additional hotel facilities, and an enlarged AirTrain system. Trump also announced plans for the world’s largest parking garage, providing about 32,000 spaces linked to the terminal through enclosed glass walkways. The redesign will eliminate the much-criticized mobile lounges, replacing them with a horseshoe train system.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy credited Trump with shaping the final concept, saying the president brought his building skills to the table. The project will move ahead without federal funding, relying on airport-generated dollars and airline contributions. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby welcomed the announcement, saying the project will produce the best airport in the world and create an arrival experience that represents what the United States stands for.
