MANGALURU: With nearly 89% of the targeted population in Dakshina Kannada having received the first dose of Covid vaccine, health and education departments have launched a programme to involve schoolkids to ask those with hesitancy to take the jab in the larger interest of public health.
At least 55% of the eligible population has received both doses. The district administration, through Lasika Jagriti programme, wants to push the first-dose coverage to at least 95%.
District health officer Dr Kishore Kumar M said the campaign has been launched in most schools in Mangaluru city limits where students are informed of the drive during the morning assembly. “The aim of the campaign is that everyone gets jabbed. Our aim is to touch 95% coverage at the earliest.”
He said every morning, teachers will brief students on Covid-appropriate behaviour inside and outside campus. They are asking students to convince people around them with vaccine hesitancy. NSS students from various colleges have been roped in to call up people who are yet to get jabbed. Kumar said NSS students have been given a designated place at the MCC war room. They will convince people to take vaccine at the nearest PHC.
