A powerful message for a drug-free India resonated across Mangalore on Saturday, as students participated in a university-level skit competition at VV College's Rabindra Kala Bhavan. The event, aimed at fostering awareness among youth, was formally opened by ACP Vijaya Kranti of the Mangalore City Police Commissionerate, who championed drama as an effective tool against drug addiction.
During his inaugural address, ACP Vijaya Kranti emphasized that theatrical performances offer an excellent platform to educate the public about the perils of drug addiction. He reiterated that it remains a core duty of the police department to disseminate crucial information regarding the effects of drug abuse and the pertinent legal provisions.
Professor Jayavanth Naik, Principal of VV College, who presided over the gathering, offered a thought-provoking perspective. He asserted that continuous mobile phone usage could have consequences akin to drug consumption, impacting individuals similarly. Professor Naik further elaborated on the devastating ripple effect of drug addiction, noting its adverse impact not just on the addict but on their entire family.
This significant awareness drive was a joint venture, meticulously organized by the Youth Red Cross Mangalore University, in partnership with the Indian Red Cross Society D.K. District Unit, and the VV College Youth Red Cross NSS and Anti-Drug Awareness Cell. CA Shantarama Shetty, Chairman of the District Red Cross Society, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Among other prominent figures present were Dr. Gayatri, Mangalore University Youth Red Cross Nodal Officer; Colonel Sarath Bhandari, Former President of the Alumni Association; Srinivas Naik and Muralidhar Kamath from the Alumni Association; Dr. Bharti Pilar, Youth Red Cross Program Officer; and Dr. Suresh, NSS Project Officer.
The competition concluded with Trisha College of Commerce and Management, Mangalore, earning the top honor. University College, Mangalore, secured the second position, while Government First Class College, Hiriadka, proudly took home the third prize, all contributing to the vital dialogue on drug prevention.
