Mangaluru, Sep. 6: Karnataka's Energy and Tourism Minister K.J. George signaled a significant push for coastal tourism development, revealing that the state government is actively contemplating the introduction of cruise services. Speaking to reporters on Sunday following an inspection of Mangaluru's 'Blue Flag' Tannirbhavi beach, Minister George underscored the government's special interest in enhancing the region's appeal.
The Minister informed that a comprehensive study focused on tourism development across coastal Karnataka has already concluded, spearheaded by the departmental secretary. Extensive discussions involving the Tourism Department and key stakeholders have since yielded a suitable framework for this coastal expansion. The government plans to launch these cruise services specifically to attract a wider range of tourists, with initial proposals suggesting an extension of operations from Mangaluru northward towards Goa.
To facilitate these new tourism projects, the administration is considering simplifying existing Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules. Additionally, Minister George mentioned that authorities are actively reviewing options for providing improved connectivity roads and essential infrastructure to the region's beaches, aiming to enhance convenience for visitors. These initiatives, he stated, are designed to generate increased employment opportunities for local residents and stimulate business growth within Mangaluru.
Addressing questions regarding homestay regulations, Minister George clarified that all such establishments must adhere strictly to the guidelines formulated by the state government.
Accompanying the Minister were several prominent officials and leaders, including Legislative Council Member Ivan D'Souza, MESCOM Chairman Harish Kumar, Coastal Development Authority Chairman M.A. Gafoor, Dakshina Kannada District Collector Darshan H.V., former MLA J.R. Lobo, KPCC General Secretary Inayat Ali, and senior officials from the Tourism Department.
