On July 25, former Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but before that, the Centre had proposed shifting him to a different portfolio as a compromise with the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). However, the CJP refused to budge and insisted on Pradhan’s resignation. According to top sources, the government had hoped that the CJP and student leaders would agree to Pradhan being divested of the education portfolio while continuing as a Cabinet minister. JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh, the two ministers representing the government in negotiations with the CJP, had offered to appoint a new Education Minister and meet the CJP’s subsidiary demands if the protest was called off. The CJP’s two principal demands, withdrawal of first information reports related to the protests and compensation for families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide, had already been accepted by the government before talks broke down. Despite this, the CJP remained firm on its demand for Pradhan’s resignation, which was eventually accepted by the government. The CJP officially called off its 36-day agitation in the national capital after Pradhan announced his resignation on July 25 afternoon.
