CBI registers six FIRs, sets up SIT to probe Manipur violence
During his visit to the northeastern state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced a CBI inquiry to probe six FIRs. Five on alleged criminal conspiracy and one on general conspiracy behind violence in Manipur.
The Central Bureau of Investigation has re-filed six First Information Reports (FIRs) and constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under a DIG-rank officer to probe cases related to communal violence in Manipur, comprising about 100 people lost their lives. The SIT has 10 officers.
During his visit to the northeastern state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had announced a CBI inquiry to probe six FIRs. Five on alleged criminal conspiracy and one on general conspiracy behind violence in Manipur. Acting on a reference from the state sent through the Centre, the CBI constituted an SIT and took over the investigation of the cases, officials said. Shah was on a four-day visit to Manipur to review the security situation in the state and bring the warring Kuki and Meiti together to resolve the unrest that has affected Manipur since May 3.
In Churachandpur, one of the most affected districts, Shah held closed-door meetings with leaders of Kuki civil society organizations, tribal representatives and intellectuals. His first round of interaction was with leaders of civil society organizations, student bodies, women’s groups and tribal leaders, which lasted for about an hour.
