On Thursday night, a four-storey building in Maharashtra’s Bhiwandi collapsed, resulting in the deaths of six people, with several others feared trapped under the debris. The incident occurred in Thane district, where authorities have launched a rescue operation. The building, which had 45 rooms, had begun tilting late on July 30 and finally gave way on Thursday night. Labourers who were working on repair work in the building had evacuated the premises after noticing the danger, reducing the number of people inside when the collapse occurred.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams working to remove debris. The NDRF has recovered two bodies from the rubble and rescued a woman, who is being treated at a nearby hospital. Deepak Kumar Yadav, a survivor, described the chaos, saying he jumped from the first floor to save his life after hearing a loud sound. Local resident Neha Singh is searching for her husband, who went missing after the collapse, and another survivor, Sangeeta Prajapati, sustained injuries while trying to flee.
According to Abhay Kumar Yadav, there were around 25 to 30 people inside the building at the time of the collapse. The administration fears that three to four labourers are still trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are progressing slowly due to the large volume of rubble, with darkness and debris hampering efforts. The NDRF and SDRF teams are continuing their operation, assisted by JCB machines and other heavy equipment.
