A 22-year-old law student, Amrutha, succumbed to stab injuries in Bengaluru on the evening of July 15, two days after she was allegedly attacked by her former boyfriend's younger brother in the city's Kodihalli area. Police have since registered a murder case and arrested both the ex-boyfriend, Dhanush, and his brother, Surya, in connection with the incident.
The assault occurred between 4 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. on Monday, July 13, near Amrutha's residence off HAL Road, falling under the Jeevan Bheemanagar police station limits. Investigators report that Dhanush and Surya confronted Amrutha, leading to an altercation during which Surya allegedly attacked her with a knife, inflicting wounds to her chest and back. Amrutha collapsed at the scene in a pool of blood and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where she received treatment for two days before passing away.
Police stated that Amrutha and Dhanush, residents of the same locality, had been in a relationship for approximately four years. Their families had reportedly become acquainted during an 'Om Shakti' religious gathering. However, Amrutha ended the relationship after discovering that Dhanush had allegedly concealed his previous marriage, divorce, and the existence of a child. Following the breakup, Dhanush reportedly continued to pursue Amrutha and threatened her for rejecting his advances.
After the stabbing, Surya attempted to flee but was apprehended by local residents and handed over to the police. The Jeevan Bheemanagar police have filed an FIR against both brothers and placed them under arrest. Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Vikram Amathe confirmed the incident's timing and stated that the motive behind the crime remains under investigation. He added that reports regarding Dhanush's marital status are also being verified as part of the ongoing inquiry. Amrutha was a law student who also worked at a diagnostic centre and had previously been employed at a pizza outlet.
