On Wednesday, a police complaint was filed against Bengali actor and former Trinamool Congress MLA Soham Chakraborty in Kolkata, accusing him of cheating a local businessman out of Rs 68 lakh. Sheikh Shahid Imam, the owner of Sonam Movies, lodged the complaint at the Charu Market police station in south Kolkata’s Tollygunge area. According to Imam, he had given Chakraborty the money in 2021 to produce a film, initially titled ‘Manikjor’ and later renamed ‘Paka Dekha’. The film was released and did well at the box office, but when Imam asked for his share of the profits, Chakraborty allegedly kept delaying payment.
Imam claimed that Chakraborty’s assistant, Arghya Chatterjee, even threatened to kill him when he pressed for the money. Chakraborty, who was an MLA at the time, allegedly told Imam that he could not pay him back. Imam also stated that he has proof that Chakraborty received money from the sale of the film’s satellite and rights. This is not the first time Chakraborty has faced such allegations, with another complainant, Kaushik Karmakar, accusing him of taking over Rs 1 crore to invest in his company, Soham Entertainment, and failing to deliver on his promises.
