On Wednesday, the second day of the BJP’s Ballari Chalo padayatra began, stretching from Lingasugur to Ballari across Raichur and Ballari districts. Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra led the march, targeting the Congress state government.
Vijayendra highlighted a letter sent by Congress MLA Ashok Rai to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, calling it proof that even ruling‑party legislators feel compelled to raise the issue of illegal commissions. He claimed the letter shows that a 7 per cent commission is being demanded from ministers, indicating deep‑rooted corruption.
The BJP leader argued that the practice has become so widespread that citizens question whether a change in government would matter. He added that the Congress administration's recent list of drought‑affected taluks—only 101 out of many in need—demonstrates selective relief. Vijayendra warned that if the remaining taluks are finally declared drought‑hit, farmers might also be forced to pay a commission to the state.
According to Vijayendra, farmers are battling deficient rainfall, crop loss and mounting debt, yet the government appears preoccupied with political maneuvering. He urged the Congress to dissolve the Legislative Assembly and seek a fresh mandate if it cannot govern effectively.
