On October 20, 2026 the Alvas Health Centre in Mudubidire announced that it has performed more than 5,000 laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures during the last decade, marking a significant milestone for the rural hospital.
Founded on May 31, 1986 by Dr. M. Mohan Alva, the centre has grown from a modest facility into a hub of modern medical care for Mudubidire and neighbouring villages. Under the leadership of surgical specialist Dr. Vinay Alva, the department prioritises minimally invasive techniques alongside conventional surgery.
Laparoscopic operations, which use tiny incisions, specialised instruments and a camera, reduce tissue trauma, lessen postoperative pain and shorten hospital stays. Patients with hernias, gallbladder disorders or appendicitis may be offered either open or laparoscopic surgery after a thorough medical assessment. The centre also provides endoscopic services such as banding for oesophageal varices and removal of gastrointestinal foreign bodies.
All selected investigations and treatments are offered at subsidised rates, making advanced care affordable for the local population. Certain laparoscopic cases employ indocyanine green green fluorescence imaging, delivering extra visual information that helps surgeons identify critical structures during the procedure.
Infrastructure supporting these services includes a surgical intensive care unit, nine operation theatres equipped with controlled airflow and stainless‑steel modular designs, and a state‑of‑the‑art CT scanner for pre‑operative evaluation. Complementary facilities such as laboratories, ultrasound, X‑ray, blood bank, pharmacy, emergency department, ambulance fleet, dialysis unit, neurosurgery and trauma care ensure comprehensive patient management.
The Alvas Health Card scheme further extends financial protection, covering consultations, diagnostic tests and selected hospital services at low cost. By bringing cutting‑edge surgical methods to the doorstep of rural Karnataka, the Alvas Health Centre continues to set a benchmark for quality, accessibility and innovation in regional healthcare.
