On Sunday, police in Mumbai arrested activist Anjali Damania and dozens of others who gathered at Shivaji Park in Dadar to back the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
According to police officials, Damania was stopped near the iconic ground, placed in a private vehicle and taken to an undisclosed location. She told PTI that plain‑clothes officers detained her and she was unaware of her destination.
Authorities said most of those seized in the vicinity have been transferred to Shivaji Park police station, while a few were sent to nearby stations. A senior officer warned that legal action will follow for assembling without prior permission.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray condemned the move, posting on X that the BJP is so fearful it is detaining peaceful student protesters in Mumbai. He pledged legal support and urged the police to reveal where detainees are being held.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Amit Thackeray announced that MNS activists will join the protest from the following day. MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande alleged that a Shivaji Park police official and BJP workers were encouraging Navratri mandal functionaries to attack CJP demonstrators, promising them legal cover.
The city has seen heavy police deployment and barricaded roads as officials aim to prevent unauthorised gatherings. On Saturday, police detained around 600 people from various locations, including August Kranti Maidan and Hutatma Chowk, for protesting without permission in solidarity with the CJP.
The Cockroach Janta Party continues to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging irregularities in voter rolls across the state.
