A coalition of urban planners, transport professionals, and concerned residents in Hyderabad has launched a significant plea to the Telangana government, urging an immediate halt to new flyover constructions and road-widening projects. Released on Thursday, October 8, the petition, titled "Let's Un-Choke Hyderabad," contends that the city's worsening traffic crisis can be effectively mitigated within six months by prioritizing affordable and improved public transportation options.
The initiative specifically targets projects under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure Programme (H-CITI) and the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP), demanding a comprehensive impact review before further construction proceeds. Beyond pausing infrastructure, the group advocates for rolling back bus and Metro fares to pre-2022 levels and restoring Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) services to their 2019 operational capacity.
Further proposals include establishing dedicated bus-priority lanes and enhancing pedestrian crossings near bus stops.
