Bengaluru: Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh spearheaded a massive late-night operation across the city this Saturday, deploying approximately 1,500 personnel to raid and inspect 400 to 500 pubs and bars. The extensive crackdown, which continued until 2 a.m., aimed to identify violations ranging from breaches of operating hours to underage drinking and other licensing irregularities.
The operation saw 19 IPS officers, including two Joint Commissioners, join jurisdictional police and the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on the field. Establishments on prominent stretches like Brigade Road, including Brigade Garden and Page 3 pubs, came under scrutiny, alongside numerous other locations throughout Bengaluru. Commissioner Singh informed the media that the inspections specifically checked adherence to prescribed closing deadlines and verified that liquor was not served to underage customers.
Police guidelines mandate kitchens to close by 1 a.m., liquor service to cease, and customers to vacate the premises by permitted hours. Beyond closing times, officers also focused on compliance with licensing conditions, particularly for venues holding licenses as ladies' pubs. They investigated whether such establishments adhered to their specific permits and if any dance performances involved alleged vulgar acts.
The sweep extended beyond individual establishments. Police set up checkpoints on major roads, conducting inspections for drunk driving and other potential criminal activities. Areas like Anand Rao Circle and Koramangala, known for their concentration of bars, also saw intensive checks. During the operation, police ensured that bars, clubs, and restaurants ceased operations, with staff directing patrons out of the premises. Authorities now plan to meticulously examine all identified violations and initiate appropriate action against establishments found to have breached regulations.
