On Oct 8, the Mangaluru City Corporation launched a special inspection drive across the coastal city, aiming to boost cleanliness and hygiene. A team of 100 officers and staff examined roughly 2,000 commercial premises for compliance with the Solid Waste Management By‑laws‑2019.

Health inspectors reported visits to 1,334 establishments. Among them, 143 shops were penalised for breaches such as not segregating waste at source, using banned single‑use plastics, littering, encroaching on footpaths and operating without a renewed business licence. The corporation collected Rs 7,20,500 in fines on the spot.

Payments remain outstanding from 20 outlets, totalling about Rs 1.26 lakh. In addition, 28 businesses that had not renewed their licences were inspected, and officials noted that 246 shopkeepers failed to display a licence copy at their premises.

The MCC Commissioner urged traders and citizens to cooperate with waste‑segregation efforts, stressing that the aim is discipline, not revenue. He warned that repeat violators could receive fresh notices, face licence cancellation or have encroaching items confiscated.

Further spot checks are scheduled in the coming days, signalling that such drives will become a regular feature to raise public awareness. Residents are also asked to separate waste at the source and hand it over to the corporation’s collection vehicles, reinforcing the shared responsibility for a tidy Mangaluru.
