Police on 5 May confirmed that 26‑year‑old Kavina Nayak of Hosangadi died after coming into contact with an illegal electric wire stretched across a garden near the local Maatinmath shrine.
According to statements from her brother Praveen Nayak, Kavina had been missing since 2 May. The Amasebailu police station logged a missing‑person report that day. Five days later, her body was discovered inside a private enclosure at the Maatinmath premises, lying on the ground in a decayed condition without any footwear.
Investigators noted that the spot where the body was found was not on the usual route to Kavina’s home, raising doubts about the circumstances of her death. The absence of sandals added to the suspicion, prompting officers to intensify their inquiry.
Further probing revealed that the garden’s perimeter was protected by a makeshift electric fence. The fence had been illegally connected to the house’s power supply by the garden’s owner, Shekhar Nayak, who had tapped electricity to deter wild animals from damaging his crops.
On the evening of 2 May, Kavina visited the garden to receive money from Shekhar, who had learned of her family’s financial need. While she was in the garden, the current flowing through the fence shocked her, causing immediate death at the scene.
Shekhar Nayak later admitted to seeing the body and attempted to conceal the incident by cutting two strands of the fence wire and wrapping them around nearby posts, hoping to hide evidence of the fatal shock.
Police arrested Shekhar Nayak on charges of illegal electricity connection, negligence, and attempting
