New Delhi ' The Supreme Court of India will welcome three new judges on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, with Chief Justice of India Surya Kant administering their oath of office at 3:30 p.m. This afternoon ceremony, set to induct Justices Sunita Agarwal, Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, and Aparesh Kumar Singh, deviates from the Supreme Court's established tradition of holding such events in the morning.
Typically, newly appointed Supreme Court judges take their oath at 10:30 a.m., aligning with the court's daily operational schedule for hearings. However, an official communication confirmed the 3:30 p.m. start time for Tuesday's proceedings, which will also be live-streamed for public viewing. The Centre moved swiftly to approve these elevations on Monday, following the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendations.
Union Minister for Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal publicly announced the President's appointments via a post on X, confirming the three Chief Justices' elevation after consultation with CJI Surya Kant. The Supreme Court Collegium had formally recommended these promotions during its meeting on September 28, 2026, a statement uploaded on the apex court's official website detailed.
Each of the three jurists brings significant experience from their previous roles as Chief Justices of High Courts. Justice Sunita Agarwal, born April 30, 1966, became Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court on July 23, 2023. Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, born June 16, 1965, served as Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, taking oath on January 21, 2025, after leading the Bombay High Court. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, born July 7, 1965, was Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court from July 19, 2025, having previously been Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.
These appointments significantly bolster the Supreme Court's judicial strength. Earlier this year, the Centre increased the sanctioned strength of the apex court to 37 judges, excluding the Chief Justice of India, a move aimed at enhancing the court's capacity to handle its caseload.
