Delhi Police Assistant Commissioner of Police Vivek Bhagat received a temporary appointment as Additional Deputy Commissioner on Monday, 5 October 2026, a few days after an independent woman journalist alleged that he molested her during a protest.
The 2018 batch officer, presently serving as Sub Divisional Police Officer at Connaught Place, was named in a government notification issued by the National Capital Territory. The notice specifies that the charge is provisional and will terminate once the Ministry of Home Affairs appoints a regular Additional Deputy Commissioner.
Police officials have described the elevation as part of a routine administrative order, adding that the request for the posting was submitted well before the molestation allegation surfaced.
Ratna Singh, legal head of the Cockroach Janta Party, highlighted the development on X, remarking that the officer accused of molesting a journalist had been promoted. Singh questioned the integrity of a system where an allegation of sexual harassment appears to be followed by a career advancement.
In a separate statement earlier that evening, the Delhi DCP account rejected claims of physical assault on female protesters. The post asserted that allegations of violence were unfounded, emphasizing that women demonstrators were handled by female staff and treated with dignity, while any detentions complied with legal procedures.
Following the controversy, Delhi Police released a set of guidelines
