Udupi district experienced heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning from Monday morning, Oct 5, affecting Karkala, Hebri, Udupi, Manipal, Brahmavar and nearby areas.

Rainfall began late Sunday night in Karkala and Hebri taluks, delivering substantial precipitation before the sun broke through in the afternoon, easing the downpour. Nonetheless, water streamed across city streets, creating bottlenecks, while low‑lying zones filled up like temporary lakes.

According to the district meteorological office, 18.6 mm of rain fell on average across the district in the previous 24 hours. Karkala recorded the highest total at 33.2 mm, followed by Hebri with 31.2 mm. Brahmavar logged 16.1 mm, Kundapura 14.1 mm, Kaup 10.9 mm, Byndoor 9.7 mm and Udupi 4.5 mm.

The sudden showers brought a welcome coolness after three to four days of intense heat and humidity. By evening, rain tapered off, allowing the sun to reappear, but isolated showers resumed after dark in several locations.

In Miyaru village, Karkala taluk, a resident named Babu reported partial damage to his house, estimating losses above Rs 25,000.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning for the next 24 hours, forecasting continued heavy rain, thunder, lightning and squally winds of 35‑45 km/h. Rough seas are expected in the Arabian Sea, prompting authorities to advise fishermen to stay ashore.

Coastal districts are urged to remain vigilant as isolated heavy rain and gusty winds are likely tomorrow.
