Mangalore, 26 September – The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) organised an Elders Day programme at Milagres Church Hall, bringing together dozens of senior citizens for prayer, fellowship and entertainment.
The event opened with an invocation by Gracy Lobo, President of the Belthangady Varado, followed by a Bible reading that set a reflective tone. Fr. Harry D'Souza, DCCW Spiritual Director, delivered a short meditation on ageing, urging participants to stay close to God and neighbours while cherishing each day.
Gretta Pinto, DCCW President, welcomed the gathering and expressed delight at the strong turnout. She recognised former DCCW presidents for their long‑standing service and urged elders to look after their health, stay positive and find joy in everyday moments.
Lydia D'Cunha, a previous DCCW president, introduced Lidwin Lobo, Coordinator of the Senior Citizens Helpline. Lobo outlined the helpline’s role, highlighting common problems such as property disputes, financial insecurity, family conflicts and neglect. She warned seniors to seek independent advice before signing any documents, especially those presented by relatives.
A poignant example shared by Lobo involved an elderly woman with seven children who was left without a caretaker, prompting police intervention and helpline assistance. The coordinator encouraged elders to keep mentally active by writing daily, engaging with grandchildren on mobile devices and solving crossword puzzles.
Personal anecdotes underscored the message; Lobo mentioned her husband’s unwavering support and his encouragement to join community activities. The programme concluded with music and light entertainment, reinforcing the belief that growing older brings wisdom and opportunities to inspire younger generations.
Overall, the celebration highlighted the indispensable contributions of seniors to families, the Church and society, while reinforcing DCCW’s commitment to serve and protect the elderly in coastal Karnataka.
