Mangaluru police have recaptured a murder accused, Prasad, who dramatically escaped from custody within the court premises on Tuesday. Prasad, a resident of Siddakatte and a key suspect in the 2018 murder of Hosabettu's Sudarshan Jain, was apprehended following a swift operation after his brief flight.
The incident unfolded during a court hearing where four individuals, including Prasad, faced proceedings related to the Sudarshan Jain murder case. While lawyers secured bail for co-accused Sandeep Shetty, Balaraj, and Prabhakar, Prasad found himself without legal representation. Consequently, the court remanded him to police custody. A previous warrant had been issued against Prasad for failing to appear on an earlier hearing date.
As police prepared to transfer Prasad to the district jail with a remand warrant, he requested to use the toilet within the court complex. Seizing the opportunity, Prasad slipped from police sight, escaping the complex and reportedly fleeing to his home. Authorities at the Bunder police station in Mangaluru promptly registered a case regarding the escape.
The original murder case dates back to August 11, 2018, when textile merchant Sudarshan Jain went missing. His body was discovered in the Phalguni River approximately a week later. Police investigation revealed Jain's murder stemmed from a financial dispute, with his body subsequently disposed of in the river. The crime occurred within the Moodabidri police station limits. In connection with the murder, police had previously arrested Sudarshan Jain's brother Sudhir Jain, along with Sandeep Shetty of Siddakatte, Balaraj from Arambodi, and car driver Prasad, on charges of aiding the crime.
