Veteran politician B. Ramanath Rai, a former minister, was discharged from a Mangaluru hospital on Tuesday evening, returning to his residence to begin a period of recovery. Rai had been admitted following a significant head-on collision near Sanur, Karkala, on Sunday, and medical professionals have now advised him 15 days of complete rest at home.
The accident occurred on National Highway 169, specifically near the Sanur Sriram Mandir divider cross. Rai's car, which included driver Abhishek, personal assistants Denzil Noronha and Charan, and a gunman, was traveling towards Karkala. The former minister was en route to attend a panchayat member's wedding engagement ceremony when a private bus collided directly with their vehicle.
While Rai himself escaped life-threatening danger, his fellow passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees. Driver Abhishek and personal assistant Charan received prompt medical attention at Yenepoya Hospital in Mangaluru, successfully recovered from their injuries, and have since been discharged, returning to their homes. Denzil Noronha, however, suffered a more serious leg injury. This required surgical intervention, which doctors successfully carried out on Tuesday. He is currently undergoing recovery from the procedure.
News of the accident and Rai's hospitalization quickly spread across the region, prompting an immediate and extensive show of public concern. Hundreds of individuals, including sitting Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, prominent leaders representing various political parties, and a vast number of his devoted fans and supporters, converged upon the hospital. Their purpose was to personally inquire about his health and offer their solidarity during his recuperation.
