Karnataka's cabinet, meeting in Mangaluru today under Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar's leadership, has granted administrative approval for the construction of the main boundary wall of the city's new central prison. Home Minister Priyank Kharge confirmed the allocation of an estimated Rs 10 crore for this crucial phase of the project, with funds earmarked from the 2026-27 financial year's budget.
This decision marks a significant step towards completing the much-anticipated new facility, which aims to alleviate the severe congestion at the existing Mangaluru District Prison. Located centrally within the city, the current prison struggles with overcrowding, necessitating the urgent operationalization of the new central jail. The construction of a robust main wall is essential for the security and functionality of the upcoming correctional facility.
The proposal for this administrative approval, setting aside Rs 10 crore for the boundary wall, was presented to the cabinet after consultation with the Finance Department. This specific allocation forms part of a larger state budget provision of Rs 75 crore designated for ongoing prison construction projects across Karnataka in the 2026-27 fiscal year. Mangaluru's new central prison receives a dedicated Rs 10 crore from this statewide fund.
Minister Kharge highlighted the government's commitment to phased development. He stated that the remaining infrastructure required to fully complete and operationalize the new Mangaluru Central Prison would be undertaken progressively, contingent on future budgetary allocations. "The administrative approval of Rs 10 crore for the main wall construction from the 2026-27 allocation is a step taken in this direction," Kharge affirmed, emphasizing the methodical approach to the project.
