Udupi recently commemorated International Democracy Day with a strong emphasis on constitutional literacy and civic responsibility. Principal District and Sessions Judge Kiran Siddappa Gangannavar, speaking at the inauguration of the 'Yuva Sansattu' (Youth Parliament) program, asserted that disciplined living stems directly from an individual's understanding of constitutional values. The event took place at the Dr. V.S. Acharya Auditorium within the Zilla Panchayat premises, Rajathadri, Manipal, organized collaboratively by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, and the Education, Law, and Social Welfare Departments of Udupi.
Judge Gangannavar highlighted that International Democracy Day, observed annually on September 15, serves to enlighten youth and citizens about their constitutional rights, duties, and democratic principles. He explained how the Constitution grants every citizen the freedom to live independently, urging everyone to adhere to its tenets. India stands as one of the few nations where a democratic system thrives, a testament to its vast population, diverse cultures, social variety, and shared ideologies across its extensive geographical spread. The Judge also paid tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, garlanding his portrait, and encouraged participants to delve into the intellectual contributions of those who shaped the Constitution, thereby appreciating its profound wisdom.
The 'Yuva Sansattu' program offers an excellent platform for students to learn about democracy and actively engage in its workings. These Youth Parliament sessions will unfold over approximately two and a half months across various schools and colleges in the district. Judge Gangannavar urged eloquent students to participate, stressing the sanctity and significance of Parliament and encouraging them to internalize its values to become exemplary citizens who can lead the state, society, and nation.
MLA Yashpal A Suvarna remarked on India's unique unity in diversity, attributing the peaceful coexistence of over 1.4 crore people to the Constitution's fundamental tenets. He called for greater constitutional awareness among India's vast youth population, inspiring them to cultivate leadership qualities from their student days to contribute to nation-building.
M.A. Ghafoor, Chairman of the Coastal Development Board, underscored that fostering love and trust among all citizens is crucial for democracy's success. He reminded the audience that democracy empowers every eligible individual with the right to vote and the freedom to elect leaders who will work for national progress, emphasizing that youth represent the nation's true asset.
Manjunath Poojary, Chairman of Sri Narayana Guru Development Corporation, articulated that the true beauty of democracy becomes apparent when it ensures "equal share for all, equal life for all." He stressed that constitutional governance must reach even the most marginalized sections of society. Deputy Commissioner Swaroop T.K. concluded the inaugural session by reciting the Preamble to the Constitution, noting that innovative programs like these have been a feature of International Democracy Day celebrations in the district for the past two to three years.
