Three separate road crashes claimed seven lives in Karnataka on Monday night and Tuesday morning as Ganesh festival celebrations were underway.
In Mandya district, a family of three lost their lives when a tanker struck their scooter at about 4.15 a.m. on Tuesday. The victims have been identified as Mutturaj, his wife Kavya and their daughter Keerthana. Mutturaj, a factory worker from Bengaluru's Peenya area, had travelled with his family to his mother-in-law's house for the Ganesh festivities and was returning to the city when the collision occurred. Police say the tanker hit the scooter from behind and then dragged it, as shown in CCTV footage. The driver fled the scene and is currently being pursued.
Another daughter from the same family survived with serious injuries and is receiving treatment at a local hospital. The bodies were taken to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, and the family plans to perform final rites at Kootaganahalli in Kanakapura.
In Kalaburagi, a man named Prashanth Biradar died after his motorcycle collided with another two‑wheeler on the Hirapura Road Flyover while he was on his way to procure a Ganesha idol. Both riders fell and sustained severe head injuries; Prashanth later succumbed at the hospital, while the other rider remains under critical care.
Belagavi district reported the third crash late on Monday. A Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus struck a motorcycle carrying three young men near Savadatti town. The victims, identified as 22‑year‑old Vinod Hogennavar, 20‑year‑old Akash and Ravi Kurubara, had travelled from Dharwad to watch a Ganesh procession and were heading back when the bus collided with them. All three died at the spot.
Police investigations have been launched in all three districts to determine the exact causes and to locate the tanker driver involved in the Mandya incident.
