Mangalore, Sep 13 2026 – The weekend and a three day holiday have set the stage for extensive Ganeshotsava preparations in both Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, as temples and public committees race to finalise arrangements.
Idol makers are applying the last touches to the deities while pandals, welcome arches and decorative lighting are nearing completion. Several public Ganeshotsava committees have announced plans for elaborate idol installation ceremonies this year, promising vibrant processions.
Local markets are buzzing with activity. Demand for flowers, sugarcane, fruits, pooja materials, banana stems and moode leaves has surged, prompting vendors from neighbouring districts to arrive in large numbers. Sales of vegetables and groceries have also risen as families prepare festive meals.
Security measures have been intensified. Police in both districts have deployed additional personnel, introduced preventive actions and set up surveillance along routes deemed sensitive. In Dakshina Kannada, 230 public Ganeshotsava installations fall under district police jurisdiction, with Beltangady sub‑division leading at 103 installations, followed by Puttur with 79 and Bantwal with 48.
Udupi district records a total of 492 Ganesha idols scheduled for installation and immersion. Of the identified celebration sites, 415 are classified as normal, 74 as sensitive and three as highly sensitive. The Udupi police have held 22 peace committee meetings, taken preventive action against 611 individuals and bound 487 persons under various provisions to maintain order.
Environmental and police authorities have jointly issued guidelines aimed at safe and eco‑friendly celebrations, urging communities to adopt sustainable practices during the festivities.
