Three men lost their lives and three others suffered serious injuries when a car overturned on National Highway 4 close to Venkatapur village in Dharwad taluk in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

The victims have been identified as K.U. Vinayak, 25; Manjunath, 29; and Basavaraja, 34, all hailing from Davangere district. They had travelled to Dharwad for a catering assignment and were returning after dinner at a roadside dhaba when the crash occurred at approximately 2.30 a.m.

According to preliminary reports, a lorry suddenly appeared in front of the car. Driver Basavanagowda braked sharply to avoid a collision, lost control and slammed into a road divider at high speed, causing the vehicle to flip completely. The three occupants died at the scene while the driver and two passengers were rushed to Dharwad District Hospital with serious injuries.

Garag police officials reached the spot promptly, secured the wreckage and launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident. The incident adds to a series of recent road tragedies in the region, including a fatal collision near Godekere Gate in Tumakuru district on August 28 that claimed four lives.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution, especially during night hours, and to maintain safe distances from heavy vehicles on busy highways. The investigation remains ongoing, and police will release further details as they become available.
