Congress Udupi District Backward Classes Vice President Kota Nagendra Putran on August 23 publicly challenged MLA Yashpal Suvarna, urging him to move beyond mere statements of readiness and actively engage with the ongoing investigation into the Mahalakshmi Co-operative Bank scam. Putran, speaking in Udupi, also pressed the legislator for a transparent account of his developmental achievements during his tenure.
Putran underscored that the Mahalakshmi Co-operative Bank scam demanded thorough investigation over mutual accusations. He insisted that the public deserved to know the truth, especially concerning any Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe and the disclosure of relevant documents. "Legislators should not merely declare their readiness for investigation but must transparently submit all documents and fully cooperate," Putran stated in a release.
Shifting focus, Putran criticized the practice of invoking past leaders' legacies to deflect current scrutiny. While acknowledging respect for figures like veteran politician V.S. Acharya, he asserted, "His achievements belong to past leaders; today's representative must showcase their own accomplishments." He challenged the MLA to detail specific development projects initiated in Udupi during his tenure, quantify grants received, list completed projects, and explain their direct benefit to the local populace.
Putran further questioned how much central funding the MLA had secured for Udupi's development, especially given the presence of his own party's government at the Centre and its parliamentarians. He asked how often the MLA had pressed his MP on these matters and what tangible results he had delivered for the fishing community, the cooperative sector, and Udupi residents generally.
Concluding his statement, Putran emphasized that those who champion Hinduism should exemplify its core tenets of truth, dharma, discipline, service, and self-restraint in their daily lives. "Merely wearing saffron or shouting slogans does not truly represent religion," he remarked. He clarified that his critique was not born of animosity but represented a fundamental democratic right to question public representatives.
