On Wednesday, August 12, a sit-in protest was held in front of Canara Bank on Udupi Court Road, led by the All India Bank Organizations Union (UFBU), to demand the implementation of a five-day banking system in a week. Phanindra, General Secretary of Karnataka Bank Employees Union and AIBA Joint Secretary, addressed the gathering, stating that a five-day working week has already been implemented in institutions like the Reserve Bank, LIC, and NABARD. However, he criticized the central government for its lack of willpower to implement this system in the banking sector. Phanindra pointed out that bank employees are facing immense work pressure, resulting in suicides and heart attacks. He warned that if the system is not implemented soon, a fierce struggle will be launched. Nagesh Naik, Udupi district convenor of All India Bank Organizations Union, mentioned that despite an agreement on a five-day week, the central government has not responded. He added that while some departments have already adopted the five-day week system, the government is hesitant to implement it in banks. The protest was attended by leaders from various bank employee and officer organizations, including Supriya, Pranav Pai, Harish Shetty, Niranjan, Mario Mathias, Ravi Shankar, and Pramod.
