On July 25, the Mangaluru Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) launched a book titled Album of the Porches: A Photographic Documentation of Mangalorean Catholic Houses at Mount Pleasant, a historic Catholic heritage home in Mangaluru. The book was released by George Albuquerque Pai and Dr. Mona Mendonca at 5:00 p.m. The 242-page book documents the architectural beauty and rich history of traditional Mangalorean Catholic houses, which are among the city’s most recognisable heritage landmarks.
INTACH Mangaluru Chapter Convener and architect Subhas Chandra Basu introduced the project, stating that it aims to preserve a unique architectural tradition that has long distinguished Mangaluru’s Catholic community. The project was led by architect Sharvani Bhat and architect-photographer Murali Abbemane, who documented 27 heritage homes across Mangaluru, recording their architecture, history, and associated memories.
George Albuquerque Pai commended the initiative, describing the book as a valuable contribution to preserving the community’s heritage. Dr. Mona Mendonca spoke about the challenges of documenting heritage buildings, highlighting the need for patience, commitment, and genuine enthusiasm. The programme concluded with a discussion on promoting heritage conservation through public awareness, government incentives, community participation, and adaptive reuse.
Published by Art Kanara Trust, Album of the Porches is priced at Rs. 1,350 and is currently available at a special price of Rs. 1,000.
