On Sunday, in Glasgow, Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu made history by winning her third successive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg category. Following her record-breaking victory, Mirabai credited her family for their unwavering support throughout her career, including the tough times when she suffered injuries. Mirabai expressed her gratitude to her family, stating that their support had been crucial in keeping her motivated. She also acknowledged the significant role of her long-time coach Vijay Sharma in helping her maintain consistency at the highest level.
Mirabai’s path to gold was not without its challenges. She initially failed to lift 82kg in the snatch, but she quickly recovered and succeeded with the weight on her second attempt. She then lifted 85kg on her last attempt, setting new records at the Commonwealth Games. In the clean and jerk, Mirabai lifted 105kg on her second attempt, securing the gold medal comfortably. This historic win makes Mirabai the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding to her gold medals from the Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022 Games.
When asked about the moment she stood at the top of the podium, Mirabai said that hearing the Indian national anthem was the most emotional part of the experience. She stated that the national anthem brings tears of happiness to her eyes, particularly since she had won India’s first gold medal. With this remarkable achievement, Mirabai has cemented her position as one of India’s most accomplished athletes.
