On July 26, the Uttar Pradesh government reformed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with investigating the alleged embezzlement of offerings at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, as per the Supreme Court’s directions. The new SIT, led by Inspector General Kiran S, includes Deputy Inspector General Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Gaurav Grover as members. This reconstitution follows the Supreme Court’s July 13 order, which mandated the formation of a fresh SIT under a senior IPS officer’s leadership. The order was issued by a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohan. The earlier SIT, comprising Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and Special Secretary Neel Ratan Kumar, had submitted a preliminary report highlighting alleged irregularities in the counting and depositing of donations. The new team has commenced its investigation and will submit a status report to the Supreme Court on July 27. The case involves the alleged misappropriation of offerings made by devotees at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, with the earlier SIT recovering cash, vehicles, and other assets allegedly acquired using the misappropriated funds.
