On the premises of the historic Fort St. George in Chennai, a significant change is underway. After more than six decades, the office of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will relocate to the Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai, a 10-storey Secretariat annex. This move is part of a major administrative reshuffle at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, driven primarily by a severe space crunch at the existing Chief Minister’s Office. The new location will provide ample space to accommodate officials, visitors, and delegations. Government sources maintain that the relocation aims to enhance administrative efficiency and visitor management.
The Chief Minister’s Office will occupy the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai, offering an unobstructed view of the Bay of Bengal. To facilitate the transition, the Public Works Department has begun preparatory work. The new CMO will be established in the existing dining hall, and several government departments currently on the 10th floor will be relocated. The Information and Tamil Development Department will move to Kalaivanar Arangam, while other departments will be accommodated elsewhere within the Fort St. George Secretariat campus.
Namakkal Kavignar Maaligai, constructed by Parsn Foundation and Engineering Company, was inaugurated in 1975 and has undergone multiple renovations. The proposed shift is expected to become a milestone in the evolving administrative history of the Tamil Nadu Secretariat, which has witnessed several relocations over the past two decades. The move is set to improve the functioning of the Chief Minister’s Office and marks a significant change in the state’s administrative landscape.
