On July 23, in Mangaluru, former minister B. Ramanath Rai expressed strong condemnation of the assault on students and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi. At a press conference held at the D.K. District Congress office, Rai stated that the opposition has every right to question the irregularities in the NEET examination. He emphasized that the students’ demands are also the demands of the opposition, and the ruling party’s treatment of protesting students and leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi is unacceptable. Rai criticized the ruling party for mocking those who showed sympathy for the assaulted students and for portraying them as traitors. He questioned what the ruling party would do if their own children were among the 21 students who committed suicide due to the NEET exam leak. Rai urged every citizen to discuss the NEET scam and the assault on students, and to scrutinize the mistakes of the current government. He drew parallels with the Bofors case, where the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s government formed a Joint Parliamentary Committee to investigate allegations. In contrast, the current government has refused to form a Joint Parliamentary Committee to investigate the fighter jet scam. Rai accused the BJP of having no faith in the democratic system, citing their dismissal of resignation demands during the farmers’ movement. He emphasized that the issue of student protests goes beyond the NEET paper leak, and that the future of students is at stake.
