On Thursday, July 23, the flood situation in Assam remained dire, with 41 fatalities reported so far and over 6.50 lakh people affected across 11 districts. In the northeastern state, several major rivers were flowing above the danger level. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to visit some of the worst-hit areas in Golaghat district. The Army, Air Force, and other agencies continued relief and rescue operations, utilizing drones to provide essential items to stranded people in remote locations.
An Assam State Disaster Management Authority flood bulletin reported 10 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the toll to 41. More than 6,53,100 people have been affected in 11 districts, with Sivasagar being the worst-hit, followed by Charaideo and Jorhat. Altogether, 487 relief camps and distribution centres are operational in 10 districts, sheltering 24,418 displaced people.
The India Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the next four days, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rain at isolated places. The ASDMA bulletin stated that Desang and Dikhow rivers were flowing above the severe flood level in Sivasagar district. The Buridihing river in Khowang and Kushiyara in Sribhumi were also flowing above the danger level.
