On September 7, 2002, a tragic road accident occurred near Mooloor Masjid of Bada village under Padubidri police station in Udupi district, claiming the life of a school boy. The lorry driver responsible for the accident, Vilas Shinde, was convicted by the court and sentenced to 3 months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000. However, Shinde, a resident of Bor Utralli, Pune, Maharashtra, went into hiding and remained absconding for 23 years. Recently, the Padubidri police of Udupi district successfully arrested Shinde in Pune, Maharashtra. The arrest was made possible due to a special operation conducted under the direction of Udupi District Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar and other senior officials. The police team received information that Shinde was working as a lorry driver in Pune and subsequently apprehended him. The accused was produced in court after his arrest. The efforts of Padubidri Police Station PSI Sakthivelu, Anilkumar T. Naik, and staff members Rajesh P, Krishnaprasad, and Sandesh Bhandari were instrumental in the successful operation. The Hon’ble Court had issued an LPC warrant against Shinde, which facilitated his arrest after 23 years of evading the law.
