On the roads of Rajasthan, a statewide safety drive launched by the Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority has resulted in the seizure of over 100 luxury sleeper buses for violating safety norms. Judges in Rajasthan have taken to the roads to enforce the drive, which aims to improve passenger safety and prevent tragedies caused by non-compliant sleeper buses. The campaign, initiated under the directions of RALSA Member Secretary Justice Hariom Atri, is being carried out in 12 districts of the state, including Jaipur and Jodhpur.

Surprise inspections have found buses operating with only one emergency exit, illegally modified sleeper layouts, and other violations of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 and AIS-119 safety norms. Praveen Kumar Jeenwal, Secretary, Jaipur District Legal Services Authority, stated that judicial officers are monitoring the enforcement drive due to the disturbing incidents of passengers being charred to death in bus fires. The inspections have triggered a rush at bus workshops across Rajasthan, with operators scrambling to restore buses to approved dimensions.

The campaign has also uncovered registration irregularities, with vehicles found to be registered in other states, including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Authorities have instructed operators to ensure passengers reach their destinations before reporting seized vehicles to police stations. The month-long drive, launched on the directions of Rajasthan High Court Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, aims to prevent tragedies like the recent bus fires in Dausa and Phalodi, which claimed multiple lives.
