On Thursday, an e-rickshaw driver named Subhan was arrested in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, following a police encounter. Subhan, who was accused of raping a 27-year-old woman passenger at a hotel, sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of fire with police and is currently receiving treatment at the District Malkhan Singh Hospital. According to doctors, his condition is stable. The woman, a resident of neighbouring Kasganj district, had arrived in Aligarh on Wednesday night for work and was searching for accommodation when Subhan approached her. He allegedly assured her that he would take her to a safe and reasonably priced hotel, but instead forced his way into her room, locked the door, and raped her before fleeing. The woman lodged a complaint at Bannadevi police station, leading to a case being registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A Criminal Investigation Wing team used CCTV footage and electronic surveillance to trace Subhan to a house in the Nagla Patwari locality under the Kuwarsi police station limits. When police raided the hideout, Subhan allegedly opened fire using an unlicensed weapon, prompting the police to retaliate in self-defence. Assistant Superintendent of Police Aditya Bansal stated that further investigation into both the alleged rape case and the encounter is underway.
