More than 90% of cities in India face the problem of waterlogging and flooding during monsoons!
New Delhi: According to a new national survey, people in more than half of the country’s cities are suffering from standing water on roads. This causes citizens to waste time, energy and productivity.
Waterlogging on roads leads to loss of working hours, property damage, traffic time and accidents. The survey reveals that cities covering all tiers of cities across the country are facing high levels of waterlogging and flooding problems.
Waterlogging of roads is common in most cities during monsoons every year. Videos of heavy rain and standing water continue to appear on social media.
A survey conducted by Local Circles, India’s leading community social media platform, revealed that nearly 94 percent of citizens feel that their city or district gets flooded during monsoons.
The Community Forum survey received over 22,000 responses from citizens across 293 districts in India. Two-thirds of the respondents were male and the rest were female. However, half of the respondents are from Tier-1 cities, followed by one-third from Tier-2 cities and the rest from Tier-3 and 4 cities.
Increasing built-up areas, lack of opportunity to collect runoff or soil to absorb it, lack of rainwater management and clogged drains are major causes of waterlogging and flooding.
The problems faced by city dwellers due to waterlogging are increased time spent in traffic, vehicle wear and tear, risk of accidents and loss of working hours.
